My Favorite Non-Profits!

25 Years of Marriage

Mayor George P. Harlamon

I have had the great blessing to be involved with some wonderful non-profits in the Boston area or in Haiti either as a volunteer, board member or as an employee. Please consider supporting all of them with your time, talents or treasures.

Wings of Hope, Haiti
Wings of Hope, Haiti

In April 2005 I visited Wings of Hope in Haiti.

In 1993 a group of French missionaries announced that they were leaving Haiti and needed to find care for the disabled children under their supervision. Michael Geilenfeld, founder of St. Joseph’s Home for Boys took some of the older boys, former abandoned children, and asked them to choose a child to bring home and care for. The boys surprised Michael when they chose to care for all the children. Wings of Hope was born. Now it is a thriving home for 35 boys and girls with disabilities. Recently renovated and expanded to include guest facilities, it is run by volunteers and graduates of St. Joseph's.

Near the entrance to Wings of Hope hangs a memorial plaque that lovingly lists the names of the nine children who were members of the Wings of Hope family when they died. When I first saw the plaque it struck me that only the first names of the children were listed: Noe (1995), Jasmine (1996), Tijan (1996), Timarie (1998), Pepe (2002) … Then I remembered that all the children at Wings of Hope had been abandoned - no histories and no names. During my days at Wings of Hope, I met 35 smiling children with no last names.
