PARKWAY SILVERHAWKS OPEN 2001 SEASON
Under the leadership of Coach Mike OReilly, the Parkway Silverhawks of the Senior Babe Ruth League began their 2001 campaign winning two of their first three games. Pitching was the name of the game as the starting pitching trio of Mike Czopor, Brian Todd and Lou Manzo combined for an earned run average of 1.89, while closer Danny DeRoma pitched hitless baseball out of the bullpen.
In the opener at Billings Field, Parkway defeated Milton 3-2 as Czopor pitched a completed game 8-strike out victory mixing his two curves with an effective fastball to hold Milton to 6 scattered hits. Parkway answered Miltons two early runs in the 4th on a leadoff walk and stolen base by Todd, and RBI singles by Rob Lourenco and Sean Fay. In the 7th, Czopor was safe on an error to leadoff, then stole second to set up the dramatic conclusion of the game. Hitting star of the game Fay stepped to the plate and singled to right. On a fine defensive play Czopor was cut down at the plate with Fay moving to third. Two pitches later, Fay raced home on a wild pitch for the winning run. Defensively Fay was flawless at third, while John Porter in centerfield and Lourenco at first base shined in the field.
At Balsh Field in Norwood, Parkway suffered a 6-2 loss in the second game. Todd pitched 5 masterful innings, striking out 7. With an excellent fastball Todd stuck out 6 of 7 batters during the middle innings. The Silverhawks threatened in the 1st when Porter was safe on an error to open the contest and Chris Tompkins doubled down the left field line. In the 4th the Silverhawks took a 2-0 lead when Fay and Czopor were safe on errors, Manzo had an RBI ground out and Czopor scored on a wild pitch. Norwood returned fire scoring six runs over the final 3 frames on uncharacteristically poor defense by Parkway. Chris Adams and Deroma both singled in the 7th for Parkway.
The final game of the week was a crisp 80-minute affair with Manzo pitching a complete game 76-pitch 5-hit victory 2-1 victory over Canton at Billings Field. All of the Silverhawks scoring occurred in the 4th when shortstop and leadoff hitter Kevin Maloof singled and stole second. Fay walked and then Dan Chisholm delivered a single to right to score Maloof. Fay later scored on an infield error by Canton. Porter had 2 assists from left field cutting down runners at 3rd base and home plate. Fay, superb behind the plate, also added a single for the Silverhawks.
