Before cable, it was the Early Show, an afternoon movie. My favorite baseball movie would play each March. Ray Milland was the baseball crazed college professor in IT HAPPENS EVERY SPRING. Dated, of course, but a real fan would appreciate his love of the game. A must see movie.
The Early Show introduced me to my second favorite movie, THE PRIDE OF THE YANKEES. Other less notable baseball movies from that era included: THE MONTY STRATON STORY (an argument for gun control), THE BABE RUTH STORY, KILL THE UMPIRE (didn't Bendix also play the Babe), THE PRIDE OF ST. LOUIS (made me Dizzy) and THE GROVER CLEVELAND ALEXANDER STORY (an argument for temperance).
All natives of Waterbury, CT have a special spot in our hearts for Anthony Perkins in FEAR STRIKES OUT. (Also a John Marston favorite.)
Before long it was off to the theaters to see the M&M Boys in A TOUCH OF MINK and SAFE AT HOME on the big screen.
Wonderful for a kid to see on the big screen
